Selvedge Denim

Many people have a perfect pair of denim jeans. Denim has been around since the 1950s. Knowing what different types of denim are available will help you pick the perfect fabric. Denim is as much of American culture as football and hot dogs at a baseball game. There are few types of denim which will give you a different look to your garments.  And one of the most common and popular types of denim is selvedge denim. Selvedge or selvage denim, also sometimes referred to as “Japanese denim,” is the highest quality denim available. It is characterized by a special weaving process that uses a single continuous thread instead of multiple cross-threads. This results in a clean inner edge on the seam of the jean and can be seen when the denim is turned inside out.

Selvedge denim is popular among designer and premium brands, and commands a higher price than normal denim. If you already have one or two of selvedge denim, then touch your denim and feel the smooth edge of selvedge denim. Selvage denim has a tight weave. This type of fabric is more expensive than other denim and is made on old-style shuttle looms which takes more time to weave.

And tips to washing these denim, do not ever wash your selvedge denim in hot water,this will fade the denim’s color and shrink the fabric immediately. Also, you can wash selvedge denim by hand in your kitchen sink or a laundry tub.  Also fyi; after the denim is dry, you will notice shrinkage in both the waist size and leg length by 1 inch and 3 inches, respectively.
