Fedora Hats

One of the most commonly worn hats, fedora can be worn by men and women of all age groups with both business and casual attire. A fedora hat is a soft felt hat that is creased lengthwise down the top, or crown. It is pinched in front on both sides. The brim on a fedora goes all the way around the hat, and many fedoras have a hat band.

The fedora hat got its name from the 1882 French play Fedora, by Victorien Sardou. The play’s heroine, Princess Fedora, was played by actress Sarah Bernhardt in the American stage adaptation in 1889. The following decade, the fedora was introduced as a female fashion accessory for middle- and upper-class Western women. Fedoras quickly became a fashion option for men as well, and were especially popular in urban areas, where men wore the hats to protect their heads from the elements and add a touch of elegance. During the first decades of the 20th century, the black fedora became a staple in the wardrobes of Orthodox Jews, many of whom continue to wear them. Fedora hats also come in many colors like petrol blue, almond green, lilac, dove, dark brown and gray, and these hats are being flexible, easy to wear yet suits well with every kind of outfit.

Fedora hats are available in many types of felt. Felt is a non-woven cloth that is manufactured by condensing and pressing fibers together. It is popular among hat makers due to the fact that it can come in any color and can be shaped into whatever style they choose. Fedoras can be made out of straw, cotton and a variety of other materials. Fedora also come in many variatoins such as canvas, tribbly hat, tweed twill, straw and wool.

Wearing fedora hats for both men and women can be simple and easier. For men, choose a fedora style hat that is consistent with your personal style. If you plan to wear it out in the evening in the fall and winter in a cooler climate, you might want to consider the fedora in felt in a classic color like, olive, beige or brown. Wearing a fedora in the summer months in a warmer climate during the day, may require a more casual fedora. A straw fedora goes well with shorts and a classic men’s Cuban-style guayabera shirt. For women, Choose a flattering color. Since a hat rests on top of the head and is very near the face, wearing a fedora that is an unflattering color can make your complexion look sallow. A fedora should be tried on in natural light to check the true color of the hat and how it reflects on your face. Change your hairstyle. Alter your hairstyle so it looks equally as flattering when wearing a fedora as when the fedora is removed. Securing the hair in a low ponytail, loose bun or simply tucking the hair behind the ears can provide a finished look that works well with a fedora. Hats have always been an integral part of fashion. Though the tradition of wearing hats started centuries ago, even today they are considered to be an important accessory that can enhance your entire look. Wear fedora hats to suit your attire and make your own fashion statement.
